Grey Wolf Dinner

Persephone was currently the sole staff of Aspen Moon Preserve, however the zoo was also currently extremely small. The zoo consisted of a Lesser Flamingo and Key Deer in their Misty Mangroves, a Black Footed Ferret in The Burrows, The Aviary had a single Crested Caracara. A Blue Wildebeest was the sole occupant of the African Plains while a Sand Cat ruled the Wild Cat Kingdom. Errol the Emperor Penguin called the Penguin Rookery his home with no others for company. Wolf Canyon was the only exhibit to have two animals of the same species, two Grey Wolves to be exact, a breeding pair by the name of Faolan and Killian. The Grey Wolves were Persephone’s pride and joy, the whole reason she got into conservation was due to canids, wolves especially. She loved all species of them. Persephone hoped to grow Wolf Canyon not only with more Grey Wolves but with other wolf species. They were her first animals in the zoo.

It was Sunday, which meant the zoo was closed. It was one of Persephone’s favorite days, she had the whole zoo to herself and could spend as much time with whatever animal she wanted without the worry of overstimulation from guests. Right now it was feeding time and Persephone had already fed all but one exhibit. She was saving the best for last, the Grey Wolves. Persephone headed back to the feeding barn where all the various foods were stored and prepared. She went over to the carnivore section and opened up the fridge, pulling out a few chunks of deer meat and loading it into a wheelbarrow. Wheelbarrows had come to be Persephone’s best friend as she tended to use them for almost everything; they were quite versatile in their carrying capabilities.

Persephone took the wheelbarrow over to Wolf Canyon and entered through the back staff entrance, first making sure the wolves weren’t right at the entrance. Persephone had a close enough bond that she felt she didn’t have to worry too much about aggression from the wolves, however it was feeding time and that couldn’t always be predicted. At the moment though the wolves were off in another part of their enclosure and Persephone unloaded the wheelbarrow before calling the wolves over and leaving the enclosure. Persephone then took the wheelbarrow back to the feed barn.

At the sound of the familiar human that frequented their enclosure and often brought gifts with her, the two Grey Wolves, Killian and Faolan, turned their heads. The two wolves twitched their noses, smelling the air as an enticing scent wafted towards them on the breeze. Dinner Time. They looked towards each other before trotting after the smell. Soon enough they came upon the meat and glanced around. Persephone had not yet returned from the feed barn and they were all alone with the occasional sound from a zoo animal or a native animal. Killian and Faolan lowered their heads and began to eat their meal.

About halfway through Persephone had returned from the feed barn to watch the two wolves eat. They had paused at her arrival, glancing her way before going back to eating. They didn’t mind the human, they enjoyed her company in fact and the many gifts that she brought. The zoo was small which meant Persephone could offer a lot of individual enrichment at the moment due to the low number of animals. Aspen Moon Preserve ran on a free will donation entry at the moment and ran a small gift shop and food stand to help with income.

Persephone smiled softly as she watched the wolves eat their dinner. She decided to pull out her camera and take a picture, posting it to the zoo’s social media with the caption “Dinner Time for the Grey Wolves”. Near the end of their meal Persephone decided to move on, letting them finish in peace.
