Grey Wolf Release

Not only did Wolf Hallow Preserve have three Vancouver Island Wolf candidates for release, they also had three Grey Wolf candidates for release. There were four grey wolves in total that Ares and Perses had planned on releasing, however their niece Demeter who also helped out at the preserve when she could, convinced them to keep the blue tan pointed female. The other three were a male and female from Killian and Faolan and the last a tan pointed male from Hati and Skoll. They had also had the blue tan pointed female that was kept behind.

At the moment all of their grey wolves resided in a multi family pack, where there were multiple mating pairs raising their pups together. The four grey wolf pups were raised in a single den occupied by both Hati and Faolan. As the pups grew older and bigger the den seemed to grow smaller and smaller. It would soon be time to move to their larger fall den now that the pups were taking up more space. The camera monitoring the pups growth had gained many viewers since the time of their birth. It had certainly been a good idea from Demeter, who tended to give the more social media type ideas.

It was a warm fall day, still the beginning of fall and feeling the heat of summer, the grey wolf pack had decided that it was time to move onto their other den. The pups were now old enough to travel and the prey in the fenced area was also beginning to move. Crescent Canyon was a massive fenced area where the wolves were able to hunt naturally which often meant the packs had to travel for their food and now with them moving on as well it was definitely time to head off to the new den.

Killian made the call to move and started going around to his pack members rounding them up and letting them know that it was soon time to move on. Their pack currently consisted of nine adult wolves and four pups. Once everyone had been rounded up they began their journey to the new den. 

It was nightfall by the time the pack had arrived at the new den and the pups were dead tired. They didn’t even bother going into the den before passing out in front of it. Faolan chuckled softly looking down at the sleepy pups, shaking her head. She then glanced up at the cave in front of them and sniffed. Killian and Skoll had already checked it out, confirming it to be empty and safe to enter. She and Hati then began to carry the pups inside the larger den, able to house everyone more comfortably. 

In the morning when the pups awoke before the others in the pack they quickly set about to explore their new den, which had also been equipped with cameras that were now active and streaming online with the other den set to offline. This much larger den was above ground in a sort of man made rock outcropping, it had moss and vines growing on top of it and down the sides. The den was located just a mile or so away from a little waterfall, a prey hot spot with the water.

The four pups were quite excited and began to tumble and play about in the den, soon awakening the adults in the pack. Aelin and Frigg were assigned pup duty and led them out from the den, taking them out to explore while some of the others went to hunt, leaving Sulfur and Aedion back at the den to keep watch while Killian, Faolian, Skoll, Hati, Tapioca and Freyja set out to hunt for the pack.

The pups were now old enough to begin hunting for themselves. They had already been taught the basics by the pack and were getting better each and every time they went out hunting with the others. Demeter had decided to name the four wolves Krill and Frill were the two from Faolan and Killian while Bramble and Garrison from Hati and Skoll. Bramble would be the one being kept while Krill, Frill and Garrison were eligible for release. There were just still some steps that needed to be taken and goals to be accomplished before the three could be released. 

Ares and Perses were quite excited for their release after the successful release earlier of the Vancouver Island Wolves. Demeter and Iliana were also excited, but the preserve was owned by the brothers and they felt quite proud of how they’d begun to grow and expand not only from wolves and canines into other species as well with more and more exhibits being made. Demeter had had multiple amazing ideas which were beginning to bring in more income to the zoo. Such as featuring the animals in post cards and calendars, setting up the cameras to live stream to a website and selling tickets for a chance to name an animal born at zoo among other things. 

Demeter was quite proud of herself and her ideas. She loves coming to the preserve and getting to help out when she’s not in school, back home at Crescent Wolf Hallow working with the animals or working at her moms little store, Wolf Hallow Shop. She was quite busy for a sixteen year old but was handling it well. Her parents made sure to never push her too far and kinda let her pick her own schedule for working at the shop and going to the preserve with her main focus being school work as well as her farm work and showing of animals. 

Back out on the preserve though the grey wolf pack was getting ready to head out on a hunt. This time the whole pack would be going, including all four of the no longer pups but almost year old wolves. Frill, Krill and Bramble played a game of chase tag while Garrison trotted near his sire Skoll. The male much preferred the company of his parents to the other pups and Demeter had felt bad he would be leaving but knew it would help other wolf populations by releasing him, Frill and Krill. Bramble however, due to her unique coloring and mutation would be staying on the preserve.

As the wolves continued on in their search of prey, they soon came upon the scent of a deer and quickly set to following it, hoping they would find more than one with how many travelled. As they followed the trail, different scents of deer began to waft towards them as they drew near to a little herd getting a drink from a stream. The wolves slowed and lowered their bodies, becoming more alert as their prey came into sight. Frill, Krill and Bramble quickly quit their game and focused on the hunt, moving into place with the pack as they began a plan to take down some deer. They’d be working in two groups of seven to bring down hopefully two deer. The wolves circled around the deer and soon leaped and gave chase.

After some struggling both groups of the pack were successful in their hunts, bringing down a deer each. The wolves all quickly began to eat their kill, finding their places in the order of eating fairly fast. Once the wolves had their fill, there wasn’t much left of the deer and they set off back home, leaving the deer to the scavengers.
